چکیده

This paper studies the effect of truncation on the large deviations behavior of the partial sum of a triangular array coming from a truncated power law model. Each row of the triangular array consists of i.i.d. random vectors, whose distribution matches a power law on a ball of radius going to infinity, and outside that it has a light-tailed modification. The random vectors are assumed to be R-valued. It turns out that there are two regimes depending on the growth rate of the truncating threshold, so that in one regime, much of the heavy tailedness is retained, while in the other regime, the same is lost.

High confidence estimates of the mean of heavy-tailed real random variables

We present new estimators of the mean of a real valued random variable, based on PAC-Bayesian iterative truncation. We analyze the non-asymptotic minimax properties of the deviations of estimators for distributions having either a bounded variance or a bounded kurtosis. It turns out that these minimax deviations are of the same order as the deviations of the empirical mean estimator of a Gaussi...

Large deviations for truncated heavy-tailed random variables: a boundary case

This paper investigates the decay rate of the probability that the row sum of a triangular array of truncated heavy tailed random variables is larger than an integer (k) times the truncating threshold, as both the number of summands and the threshold go to infinity. The method of attack for this problem is significantly different from the one where k is not an integer, and requires much sharper...

Henrik Hult , Filip Lindskog and Thomas Mikosch : Functional large deviations for multivariate regularly varying random walks

We extend classical results by A.V. Nagaev (1969) on large deviations for sums of iid regularly varying random variables to partial sum processes of iid regularly varying vectors. The results are stated in terms of a heavy-tailed large deviation principle on the space of càdlàg functions. We illustrate how these results can be applied to functionals of the partial sum process, including ruin pr...

Central Limit Theorem for Truncated Heavy Tailed Ba- Nach Valued Random Vectors

Situations where heavy-tailed distributions is a good fit, and at the same time there is a physical upper bound on the quantity of interest, are common in nature. Clearly, the natural model for phenomena like this is a truncated heavy-tailed distribution a distribution that matches a heavytailed one till a specified limit and after that it decays significantly faster or simply vanishes. This le...

Large Deviations for Minkowski Sums of Heavy-tailed Generally Non-convex Random Compact Sets

We prove large deviation results for Minkowski sums of iid random compact sets where we assume that the summands have a regularly varying distribution. The result confirms the heavy-tailed large deviation heuristics: “large” values of the sum are essentially due to the “largest” summand.
